WazirX Cryptocurrency Exchange Loses $230 Million in Major Security Breach

Indian cryptocurrency exchange WazirX suffered a security breach resulting in the theft of $230 million in assets from a multi-signature wallet operated using Liminal’s custody services since February 2023. The breach was due to a mismatch in the displayed information on Liminal’s interface, allowing the attacker to gain wallet control. While Liminal stated that WazirX wallets on its platform remain secure, the compromised wallet was created outside its ecosystem. Blockchain analytics firm Elliptic and researcher ZachXBT suggest North Korean threat actors, likely the Lazarus Group, were behind the attack. This incident is part of a broader pattern of North Korean cyber attacks on the cryptocurrency sector, which have netted $3 billion in illegal revenues since 2017.
