According to Darktrace’s 2023 End of Year Threat Report, Malware-as-a-Service (MaaS) infections were the top threat to organizations in the latter half of 2023. The report highlighted the evolving nature of malware, with strains increasingly incorporating multiple functions and greater interoperability with existing tools, making detection more challenging. Notable examples include ViperSoftX, an advanced information stealer and RAT targeting credentials and cryptocurrency wallets, and Black Basta ransomware, which also spreads the Qbot banking trojan. The most prevalent MaaS tools during the period were malware loaders (77%), cryptominers (52%), botnets (39%), information stealers (36%), and proxy botnets (15%).
