The New York Blood Center (NYBC), one of the largest independent blood collection organizations, was hit by a ransomware attack on January 26, disrupting its operations and forcing the rescheduling of some appointments. Despite detecting suspicious activity over the weekend, NYBC confirmed it was a ransomware incident and immediately engaged cybersecurity experts to investigate and contain the threat. While blood donations are still being accepted, some donor appointments and blood drives were canceled due to ongoing disruptions. The attack came shortly after NYBC declared a blood emergency due to a nearly 30% drop in donations. The center has not disclosed whether any personal or health data was accessed, though ransomware attacks often involve data theft. NYBC is working with hospital partners to restore services and fulfill orders. This follows similar attacks affecting other blood donation organizations, including OneBlood and London hospitals.
