The Council of the European Union has sanctioned three Russian GRU officers—Nikolay Korchagin, Vitaly Shevchenko, and Yuriy Denisov—for conducting cyber espionage against Estonia. The attacks targeted government ministries, leading to the theft of classified documents, business secrets, and health records.
Unit 29155, a cyber threat group linked to past attacks on NATO countries, has also disrupted aid efforts to Ukraine since 2022. The group is tracked under names like Cadet Blizzard and Nodaria by cybersecurity researchers. Korchagin and Denisov were previously charged by the U.S. DoJ for cyber intrusions against Ukraine, the U.S., and 25 NATO members.
Following this enforcement, 17 individuals and four entities now face E.U. asset freezes and travel bans, with restrictions on financial transactions involving them.
